About Our Chapter
Since its establishment, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly established itself as a public service organization that strives to confront the problems of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. A wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have emerged and evolved over the years. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:
- Educational Development
- Economic Development
- International Awareness and Involvement
- Physical and Mental Health
- Political Awareness and Involvement
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Westchester Alumnae Chapter is committed to enriching the lives of those in the Westchester community. As part of its mission, the Sorority has instituted a number of programs serving the needs of youth, adults, and seniors.
Toast to Spring Scholarship Brunch
Established in 1976, the Toast to Spring Scholarship Brunch is held annually and has become one of the chapter’s signature events. Funds raised from generous contributions assist us in awarding scholarships to exceptional college bound high school seniors who attend or reside in Westchester County.
Mentoring
WAC administers two mentoring programs for young girls: Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy and Delta GEMS as well as one mentoring program for boys: EMBODI. The programs reach girls and boys from ages eight to eighteen, and meet on a monthly basis. Activities are age appropriate and are designed to empower these youth to become future community leaders. They include self-esteem dialogues, workshops, visits to local museums, Kwanzaa celebrations, career and financial planning conferences, and college preparatory workshops. Each group also participates in at least two public service activities annually, such as feeding the homeless, visiting senior centers and toy drives.
Political and International Awareness and Involvement
WAC regularly registers voters throughout the county at local churches, supermarkets and shopping areas. Additionally, sample voting machines are utilized to acquaint first time voters with the balloting process. Our political involvement also includes an emphasis to “Get Out the Vote” during major elections as well as census education. Recently, WAC rallied the membership and partnering organizations to support the Jewish World Watch which provides solar cookers to the women of Darfur. This collaboration resulted in close to $13,000.00 in contributions.
Physical and Mental Health
As part of the Sorority’s national agenda to promote health and wellness, WAC has implemented several heart disease awareness and prevention programs. These programs are a part of the Sorority’s partnership with the American Heart Association, which calls on Deltas nationwide to educate the community about the number one killer of African American women. In addition, activities have targeted diabetes, breast cancer and childhood health issues.
Arts and Letters
Westchester Alumnae Chapter is a proud supporter of the arts and collaborates with area museums, bookstores, libraries and art institutions to promote and exhibit the works of new authors, artists, and performers. WAC also hosts opening day film screening and theater parties for our members and guests to encourage patronage of movies and plays with African American representation. WAC recently hosted a book chat with nationally acclaimed author, Daniel Omotosho Black, to discuss his book “Perfect Peace.”
Project ACE
Conceptualized in part by our past chapter president, Charlene Gairey, Project Ace is an ongoing program that supports sorors in the transition from collegiate to alumnae membership. Through this work, collegiate and alumnae sorors are able to network and fellowship via participation in sisterhood activities. At WAC we routinely partner with our collegiate sorors to implement our regional and national programming initiatives.
