Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated, Westchester Alumnae Chapter (WAC)
was chartered on October 31, 1959 by 16 visionary
women in response to the growing need for social,
political, and educational programs in the Westchester
area. Since then, the chapter has grown considerably,
and now boasts 150 members from diverse professional
backgrounds.
WAC perpetuates the Sorority’s tradition of
public service through programs that initiate social
change, encourage academic excellence and elevate
cultural awareness within the community. Some of
the chapter’s projects include mentoring programs,
back to school clothing drives, ”Go Red”
heart disease awareness campaigns, donating thanksgiving
baskets to families in need and the Delta Middle
School Student Service Award. The chapter recently
launched TAP: Tutorial Assistance Program as part
of its community outreach to disadvantaged students.
Additionally, WAC’s annual signature event
– Toast to Spring Scholarship Brunch –
provides scholarships for young women from Westchester
pursuing a college education.
For its work in the community, Westchester Alumnae
Chapter received the Eastern Region Chapter of the
Year Award (2007), Sister-to-Sister International
Community Service Award (2006), the National Council
of Negro Women Mary McLeod Bethune Award (2006),
and several accolades & proclamations from the
American Heart Association and local elected officials.
