HIV Specialist Cecilia Dean, RPA was the keynote speaker followed by a HIV Prevention panel discussion led by the Westchester County Health Department. DSTWAC provided $500.00 in Stop and Shop gift cards to patients in attendance who are living with HIV/AIDS. The 12th Anniversary Vigil of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. took place on Sunday, November 19th in front of the White Plains Public Safety Building. Westchester Alumnae Chapter is one of the active organizations of the Westchester Coalition for Police Reform since its inception formed following the killing of Mr. Chamberlain Sr. Dozens of friends, advocates and community organizations gathered. We are excited to cultivate a wonderful community partnership with the Beta Alpha Alpha (BAA) Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. this programming year! In October we partnered with BAA on a "Spooktacular Halloween Event" benefiting the youth at the Coachmen Center in White Plains. On October 16, the 2023 and October 23, 2023 DSTWAC's Social Action Committee collaborated with the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle for two Meet the Candidates forums! Candidates running for County Legislator Districts 10 and 11, New Rochelle Mayor and New Rochelle City Council in the 2023 General Election engaged in lively discussion about issues impacting the New Rochelle community. DSTWAC supports breast cancer awareness and walks because we know that each step leads us closer to a cure! Did you know that African American women are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer and are more likely to die of breast cancer than other women? (CDC, 2021; National Cancer Institute, 2020) September 19th was National Voter Registration Day! DSTWAC partnered with the League of Women Voters New Rochelle branch to register voters and distribute voter information at the New Rochelle Public Library! Congratulations to the Good Health Wins Subcommittee of Westchester Alumnae Chapter for two successful Good Health Wins Series where crucial information about physical and mental health care was presented by a panel of esteemed professionals. Both events were in collaboration with the Westchester and Hudson Valley Sections of the NCNW. On June 21, 2023, DSTWAC sorors attended the screening of the RIGHT TO READ DOCUMENTARY hosted by hosted by The National Alliance of Black School Educators Northeast Region (NABSE NE) in collaboration with The Brown Urban Mother Partners, Inc (BUMP). Our chapter charitable partnerships committee proudly supported the 15th Annual YWCA "IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN" event. The YWCA actively works towards eliminating racism and empowering women in our County. Westchester County Executive George Latimer brought opening remarks. Soror Tiffany S.W. Hamilton led a fireside chat highlighting the important work of the YWCA women leadership in our community. Soror Yorri Berry delivered an inspirational word. On Saturday, May 6, our 2023 DSTWAC scholars were recognized and awarded 21 scholarships totaling $29,900 at the First Baptist Church in Bronxville, New York. Parents, family, friends, mentees, school counselors, and Sorors gathered to celebrate and hear the wonderful accomplishments and inspiring journeys of these 21 young ladies. Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz was the inspirational speaker and gifted each of the scholars with an autographed copy of one of her books. We're finally back in person and we're coming in 🔥🔥🔥 with the most unforgettable event of the year - our 47th Annual Toast to Spring Scholarship Brunch! What an afternoon to remember! Job well done to our dynamic Brunch Committee Tri-chairs Summer Dawn Derrick, Dawna Michelle Fields and Maiysha Warren! Mark your calendars for the next one on April 28, 2024 - it's an experience you won't want to miss! DSTWAC Sorors attended Delta Day NYC! At the NYC City Council Stated Meeting on February 16th, 2023, Resolution 0488 was passed designating March 3rd annually as Delta Day in NYC. s we were unable to convene on March 3rd this year, the NYMCC Social Action Committee held Delta Day NYC on April 27, 2023 at the NY State Assembly Office and NYC City Hall. Local elected officials spoke of important legislation being introduced to combat poverty and increase public safety. At the end of the day we attended a City Council stated meeting and were greeted by Mayor Eric Adams. Special thanks to Sandra Richards and Morgan Stanley who invited members of Westchester Alumnae Chapter to the advanced screening of "SWEETWATER" at the Directors Guild Theater. The film written depicts the true story of Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African American to sign a National Basketball Association (NBA) contract in the 1950s. We had an incredible turnout of over 500 attendees at our recent book signing event with Soror Sheryl Lee Ralph; over 1000 books were sold for the weekend! DSTWAC was thrilled to partner with the Youth Shelter of Westchester and the Sonesta Hotel White Plains bringing together the community for an unforgettable night of fun, inspiration and empowerment. Forward with Fortitude! Our Westchester sorors, including National Social Action Commissioner & DSTWAC Social Action Co-Chair, Kimberly Hayes, Sandra Lesibu and Cheryl Joseph, are proudly representing #DSTWAC at the 19th Annual Delta Days at the United Nations. Over 30 chapter Sorors and guests attended the SOLD OUT "Ledisi Sings Nina" performance together -- a tribute to legendary Nina Simone Carnegie Hall After the show, President Morgan went backstage to present Ledisi with chapter gifts curated by Black women entrepreneurs! Westchester Alumnae Chapter participated and donated books in the March of Dimes, Prematurity Awareness Month, and Family Support Book Drive! We donated approximately 140 books that will benefit babies and their families at White Plains Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). On MLK Jr Day of Service 2023, Westchester Alumnae Chapter donated over 100 "banned/ challenged books" by Black authors and blankets to women residing in two local shelters! Westchester Alumnae Chapter is laser focused on doing our part to ensure we continue to support these important works and donate to our community. Westchester Alumnae’s Delta Academy is back again this year with 19 amazing mentees. Entering its third month of activities curated to EmpowHER young girls between the ages of 11-14, this past Saturday we had the pleasure of learning how to make candles with Ms. Andrea from The Decor Life. Science, math, arts, and lots of holiday fun were all key components in this incredible workshop. The Westchester Alumnae Chapter partnered with the National Pan-Hellenic Council - Westchester Chapter for a “Wrap for a Purpose” event on Saturday, December 10th at the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester. We were able to fellowship and have fun, while wrapping gifts for 62 children of families in need! We partnered with Jack and Jill-Westchester Chapter for an IMPACTFUL “Fall Thanks & Giving” Community Service Project on Saturday, November 12, where we donated and distributed over 500 items including throw blankets/pillows, wall art/decal, rugs, and other room décor to over 100 amazing children/teenagers at the JCCA Pleasantville Cottage. What a wonderful time seeing the smiles on these youngsters picking out their items and spending time with them through sports and dance activities. Oh Happy Day! DSTWAC lead an “Honor the 22” GOTV Caravan during the last weekend of early voting in New York to remind our community that #MidtermsMatter and to Get Out and Vote! We drove from Westchester County Center to Cross County Shopping Center! Along the way we were greeted with honks and waves from the community. We distributed voter information at our final stop. On October 19th, 2022, DSTWAC chapter members joined several in County leadership, such as Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah, and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins for My Sisters' Place Fall Luncheon to support victims of domestic violence. Join us in supporting My Sister's Place, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, by donating today at www.mspny.org On Saturday, April 2nd, members of DSTWAC attended the Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the Harriet Tubman Journey to Freedom Statue in White Plains. Many dignitaries were in attendance including U.S. Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY 16) and U.S. Congressman Mondaire Jones (D-17). The event was covered by News 12 Westchester. In collaboration with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., conducted their Annual Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness Virtual Workshop DST WAC Celebrates HBCUs On October 16th, 2022, members of DSTWAC joined the Westchester County community and communities across the nation in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer! Special thank you to all who helped us to raise over $1,913 which will be used toward the fight against this deadly disease through funded breakthrough research, 24/7 support for breast cancer patients, and access to lifesaving screenings. Voter Registration and International Jazz! DSTWAC joined the League of Women Voters New Rochelle for a day of arts and social action at Ruby Dee Park in New Rochelle, NY on Saturday October 8, 2022. We registered voters, distributed poll worker information and educated the community about the upcoming General Election on November 8, 2022. Westchester Alumnae Chapter Arts & Letters and chapter members joined more than 300 attendees for a Book Talk with the talented actor, activist and author Jenifer Lewis and her new book - "Walk In My Joy: In these Streets". The book is a collection of funny, heartfelt and reflective stories of resilience! Spring into health was a success because sorors showed up and served! Thank you to all the volunteers for setting up, distributing to breaking all the content down, we engaged with well over 300 people that day! On January 30th, 2022 our Heritage and Archives Committee held an amazing session on genealogy. Guided by our own DST WAC Soror, Anika Khan, a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and other genealogical societies, we explored resources that will help us to tell our stories!
